Identification, Protection and Exploitation of Intellectual
Property
NovaUCD is responsible for the implementation of the UCD policies relating to intellectual property and for the provision of advice on the identification, protection and exploitation of intellectual property resulting from UCD Research.
[Summary of UCD's Intellectual Property Policy and Procedures (2006)]
The level of research at UCD is increasing significantly. During 2006/07 UCD was awarded €96 million in funding from state agencies, charities, industry and other commercial organisations. Many of the recently funded projects are now at a stage where intellectual property with commercial potential is becoming a reality.
A key priority for NovaUCD is to work with UCD researchers in taking their research-generated innovative ideas from proof-of-principle to full commercial success. Whenever possible the intellectual property is managed for the benefit of enterprise development in Ireland. This may involve licensing to commercial partners or the creation of spin-off companies.
In 2006 UCD filed 15 priority patent applications across all areas of life sciences, engineering and information communication technology. In addition three PCT and two national/regional patent applications were filed. Eleven licence agreements were also signed in 2006 with a range of indigenous and international companies.
UCD has a growing portfolio of licensing opportunities available for exploitation by campus companies and other NovaUCD clients in the industry and business community.
